When is the best time to go skiing?

When you’re planning a skiing or snow boarding trip, it’s important to choose the right time of year to pack up and head to the mountains. You want to have plenty of snow, you’d like good value for money and you want it to be busy – yet at the same time not too busy.

When do the resorts open?

Most mountains open mid-December and close at the beginning of April. On the plus side of going at the end of the winter season, the days will be longer and the closer you are to Easter, the more likely it is for the sun to be shining. These longer daylight hours mean longer lift opening hours, and ultimately more time to enjoy après-ski activities.

When is it cheapest to go?

Prices go up at peak times such as Christmas and New Year, and during the school holidays of Christmas, Easter, and particularly February Half Term, so if you can try and avoid these times, it will be a lot cheaper! January is quiet and more peaceful, as people find they need to save money after an expensive Christmas! It tends to hold the best deals, so this post-Christmas season is a good time to go. Further into March it gets quiet again and also the prices do go down. There are some great family offers from Mid-March on that you should have look at!

Naschmarkt Vienna

Named the “city’s stomach” by locals, the Naschmarkt, a food and flea market, has existed since the 18th century and is Vienna’s largest inner city market. The Naschmarkt is open from Monday to Saturday for strolling, admiring, discovering and sampling.

You can buy everything to do with food: fruit and vegetables, meat and fish, bread and cheese. There are also delicatessen favourites such as Persian caviar, sushi and oysters, as well as a colourful display of international produce, especially from the countries of former Yugoslavia, Greece, Turkey, Japan and China.

If the sight of all this bounty makes you hungry, you can eat right in the Naschmarkt at a choice of restaurants. And on Saturday don’t miss a visit to the most famous flea market in Vienna, which is held right next door.

Some of the Christmas markets are open until the 6th of January!
